I have been having a barrage of discipline action in my home the last couple of weeks, I don't know if it is the heat, lack of naps, going to bed to late or just plane trying to find out where my boundaries are and if my threats are real or not.
My children have a reputation of being very good and behaved children. Here lately they have been "asking for it" I found myself threatening them the other day, "if you do that one more time, I am going to paddle your hiney." I caught myself and remembered our rule. The rule says. You don't receive warning, when you do something that requires a pop or two, I stop what I am doing and ask you to get me the stick. My children love it when I warn them, but 2 things happen when I send a warning instead of direct discipline. #1. I start to get angry when I have to repeat myself. #2. They become more strong willed as I let the action go. I tend to believe that a child is not "strong willed" they are just more strong willed than the parent. Let's face it, It is a HUGE inconvenience to stop what we are doing and discipline our kids, it's not in the schedule or plan of what and when of the day. We have to decide in our hearts that it is a priority. It makes it a lot more pleasant to deal with than when I get mad and start to sin myself by yelling at my kids and acting foolish. Proverbs 22:15. Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. the word, "shall" is used because we have to be persistent and more strong willed than the child for the effects to come. I have popped and popped my child's rear and nothing seems to change on the outside, but eventually they get it. I asked them the other night while they were engaged in a serious game of baseball on the x-box..."do you guys think spankings work" They were both nervous in there response thinking that they had done something, but they both replied yes to the question.
You may not believe that spankings are the correct way to discipline, but in our house it works, because the Word says to, but we have to do it correctly, not out of anger or frustration, it has to be in love and correction. I am very proud of my children, most of the time. It's just like anything else in the Word, You have to believe it first before it works for you. It takes Faith.
